Hey guys & girls,
I am Mark and am new to the BMX scene.
Had a Raleigh Grifter XL back in the day, but now own a Redline Series 3 600a.
I have grown up with this bike, being owned by a good friend of mine at school, and I am now working my way through a sympathetic "restoration" of it.
The frame shows some signs of it's age (with some light rusting in a few places) but now I have cleaned & ploished it it looks great.
The forks do not appear to be genuine Redline (and is in need of replacement really), nor does the crank - but it does have StarX mag wheels, and some old, but not original CW style handlebars. The grips have seen better days and are Day Wen
I got it from my friend at the end of last summer, where I basically wiped it down, lubed the (very rusty) chain and rode it!
Here is a photo of it with my '73 Bay Camper
and also with Martyn Ashton - who saw it at Eastbourne Extreme last year and loved it!
I stripped it totally yesterday as there were various bits I wasn't happy about, and now I am looking out for some parts so I can re-assemble.
A headset is a must (as it is one ball short) and the cages seem stretched a little. Also the top piece has a split in it.
Forks are the next thing, as half way down there it a stripped portion of the thread. Brakes need a full overhaul, so I am replacing cables and blocks with new. And the tyres - the rear is down to the cords in places, and both are very hard
I am also considering a replacement crank - the 1-piece on it is very rusted (as is the front chain-wheel).
So what do you guys all suggest I should do - I may change the wheels for a spoked pair I have in the shed, as I am not the smallest person in the world, and I dont want to break the Mags - they feel quite flexible under load - but that could be the dodgy tyres too.
Any one have any parts they can recomend for replacement? Does anyone know of some chrome forks that would suit?
